Day 81: The Cannon of Dun

We woke up after a chilly, but comfortable night's sleep. We packed up and were off the family's property by 8am. Then we hiked. It was pretty nice and flat, and the temperature was pleasant. One Life and David talked a bunch about the Civil War while I drifted away in thoughts about food and other dreamy topics.

David wanted to make sure he climbed at least one mountain while he hiked with me, so he parked the second car on the other side of Blue Mountain. There was a nice steep section of trail before getting to Darlington shelter for a snack. We chatted with a couple of day hikers who thru hiked in 2006.

We left the shelter to finish the last 2 miles to get to the car. It was nice and easy downhill before opening back up to sunny fields. Once at the car, we downed a few hot gatorades (left in the car) and took off our shoes. It was hot. We took a few photos before saying goodbye to David. Too short of a trip! But really glad he got to be a part of my hike. First family member to hike with me!

Since it was so hot, One Life and I continued the break until we were ready. We climbed up another hill with lots of rocks and made it to the empty Cove Mountain shelter. We chilled out and talked about life for a while before getting water and moving on. Apparently there is a porcupine named Augustus who lives there, but we didn't see him.

A few hours later (and many many many rocks later) we rolled downhill into town. Duncannon! We got Slurpees at the gas station before catching up with Xan, Neutron, Sandbagger, Scatters and Chopstix at the infamous Doyle hotel. Hey guys!! We chatted and got dinner, and we got a room with Scatters before finally getting the laundry in and taking a shower. It had been six days since I last washed my hair! (though I did jump in the pool...)

After the clean up, I hung out with Scatters, Tattoo, Klarity, Hedgehog, Mountain Tattoo, and Dumpster Bear for Power Nap's birthday. Good times.... and CAKE! Trail Angel Mary was there, too. Fun little spot, the Doyle. The room is a bit of a dump, but it will do us just fine... Bed.

Maybe a zero tomorrow for the 4th...?

I just really can not believe you have been hiking for 5 months. I am blown away! I heard about Mike's near death experience, crazy! Happy Fourth of July!
