It was nice and breezy in the morning. A bit of a climb up to High Cock Knob (seriously...?) to begin the day, but really nice, mostly-downhill hiking for most of the rest. The boys caught us at the last shelter and we all had a final snack before the last 2.2 miles to the James river. And then we were there!
The Foot bridge is a foot bridge that was named in honor of a guy with the last name Foot. Weird, right? We walked all the way over and found Little Foot and Moped hanging out with a cool guy named Muddy Waters. Muddy had a sweet trail magic selection set up for us, and we feasted. It was about 2pm so we were quite early for Jeanne and Wendy. We ate sandwhiches and cookies and enjoyed cold sodas. Even an apple! Then Muddy Waters took us back over the bridge to where you can jump off. There were a bunch of kids hanging out, jumping off already. Seemed like the thing to do on a hot Sunday afternoon!
The bridge is 30 feet from the surface of the water on the bottom rung of the bridge and 40 feet from the top. Little Foot went first, then Neutron, then Achilles. Everyone went from the top rung. So then I had to follow suit. It was great! And the water wasn't too cold. I got a few great photos on my camera. Xan didn't want to jump, so he hung out with the bags and the food. It started to rain a bit after we'd all jumped so we headed back and guess who was there - Jeanne and Wendy!
We dried off and packed our stuff into their cars once again, and we enjoyed the cold drinks they brought along. Off to Glasgow! We stopped at the Dollar General to resupply then headed out of town a bit to eat. The DG lady suggested the Pink Cadillac, and it was a bit if a fun, weird place. Xan, Brian, Little Foot, Achilles, Moped and I feasted. Little Foot's "Elvis burger" was enormous and very messy. Good entertainment watching him chow down.
After ice cream we rode back to the new shelter in Glasgow. Although this shelter is still being built, there it an outdoor shower and plenty of grass to tent. We did a little more organizing while Wendy and Jeanne were still there. Then they brought out a pan of brownies with candles in it for Neutron's birthday (which is this Friday). They are so sweet and thoughtful :)
Brownies, snacks, soda, Cheerwine, and hugs as Jeanne and Wendy finally left. It was so easy to say goodbye all the other times, but we were pretty sure this time would be the last on the trail. (I get to see them in October though!!) They may never realized how much we appreciate their help, but I hope they had a fun time with us. Jeanne and Wendy- thank you so so so much!! Your generosity and thoughtfulness and love has been amazing!! I'm so spoiled to have you two in my life! Can't wait to see you in October!
By the time the ladies left, it was probably around 6 or 7. The sun was slowly going down, but was going down hot. I tried out the shower at the shelter. After a quick game of turn-the-water-on-too-much-and-chase-the-hose-around, I managed to enjoy a wonderful cold shower. There was even shampoo and conditioner in there!
We were all still pretty stuffed from dinner, so we went for a walk around this cute, small town. Achilles and Moped went to bed early. Xan, Neutron, Little Foot and I hung out in the playground across from Dollar General, talking about childhoods and playground memories. Now we're in our tents, ready for bed. Bridge jumping in the morning......?
